Bachelor and Graduate Specialist Programmes

The gemological specialisation was approved at Moscow University Geological Faculty in 1996. Students are admitted for speciality “Geochemistry” in a general procedure and are forwarded to specialisation “Gemology” on a competitive basis in the middle of the second year of training. Apart from the traditional range of the knowledge offered at geological faculties and gemological institutes of the world, much attention is paid to economics and market, precious materials extraction and processing technology, the jewellery business and design, foreign languages and computer skills.

The training programme comprises gemological field trip to gemstone mines in the Urals, at the facilities for the production of synthetic crystals and diamond sorting practice at a cutting (jewellery) company or a gemological laboratory. The students carry out the scientific studies of precious stones on the basis of which they fulfil term and diploma papers. Four year training is completed with the defence of a bachelor thesis, obtaining the bachelor diploma in speciality under the title of geology and geochemistry and specialisation in gemology, and the defence of a diploma paper and the possibility of further training at masters’ courses. Five year training is completed with the defence of a diploma paper and obtaining a high education diploma in speciality under the title of geology and geochemistry and specialisation in gemology.

    Master Degree

Masters’ training programme in Gemology is available at Moscow University Geological Faculty. The Master of Gemology training programme is intended for two years of training. Persons with high geological education are admitted into the masters’ courses. Training at the masters’ courses is completed with the defence of a master’s thesis and obtaining a master’s diploma in the speciality under the title of geology and geochemistry and specialisation in gemology. Free competitive admission and paid training forms are possible.

    Post Graduate Study

The post-graduate study is intended for the persons having high education in any field. Post-graduate study can be with competitive admission and target-oriented, as well as daytime training and correspondence courses; the programmes are intended for three years of studies. Apart from the training programme, a post-graduate student is involved in independent studies and writes a candidate’s thesis. After the thesis is defended, a scientific degree of a candidate of geological and mineralogical sciences (PhD) is awarded.

    Doctorate Study

The doctorate programme is intended for the persons having a scientific degree of a candidate of geological and mineralogical sciences and wishing to carry out studies in the field of gemology and associated disciplines, as well as those preparing for defending a doctor’s thesis.
